Volunteer Activities
Everyone is encouraged and welcome to make this event special for our triathletes. Volunteer roles are listed below. Feel free to contact us with volunteer questions.
Set-up and Breakdown Crews
Volunteers play a very important role in the Festival set-up and breakdown of the transition area, road marking/signs, finish line/chute and general clean up on the day(s) before and directly following the post race party conclusion.
Packet Pick-Up
Volunteers assist in enthusiastically greeting athletes at packet pick-up to hand-out race packets, numbers, goodie bags and race-shirts the day before the actual event.
Parking
Volunteers work with Deep Creek Lake State Park rangers to direct arriving participants to park in designated parking areas.
Body Marking
Participants are marked with black magic markers so that they can be more clearly identified as they exit the swim and throughout the race. Volunteers write the participant's number CLEARLY and LEGIBLY on both arms and both upper legs, in addition to the event category on the back of their right calf.
Kayak Swim Support
Volunteers who own kayaks or canoes are encouraged to join us for this important assignment as the eyes and ears for problems that athletes may encounter during the swim. Please note any lifeguard or water rescue certifications.
On Shore Swim Support
Volunteers on the shore assist with the check-in procedure and wave chute management prior to the beginning of the swim, maintain spectator distance from the staging area and direct swimmers upon exit from the water
Transition Area
The Transition area is the enclosed area containing the athlete's bikes and gear, and is the busiest staging ground of activity for the race. Volunteers are necessary to keep spectators out of the transition area, direct athletes to their assigned racking area and answer basic questions. During the event, volunteers play the very important role of traffic cops - directing participants in and out of the appropriate entrance/exit of the transition area and continue to maintain spectator distance from this busy hub of activity.
Bike Course
Volunteers on the bike course play a very important role to direct bicyclists to turn the appropriate way in advance of certain intersections, warn of road conditions, steep downward grades, sharp turns, etc. – in general, serving as the very important advance eyes and voice of caution for race participants.
Sag Vehicle Drivers
Volunteers drive the vans that provide bike support and pick-up to participants during the race that experience equipment malfunction or do not or will not complete the bike stage before the cut-off time.
Run Course
Volunteers on the run course play a very important role to direct runners to make correct turns along the race route.
Aid Stations
During the bike and run portion of the event, aid stations are available at pre-determined spots along the course. Volunteers hand participants bottles (bike) or cups (run) filled with water, energy drinks and hand-out energy gels. Volunteers also pick up cups and bottles and assist in clean-up during the event to keep the course free of obstacles for participants and immediately upon conclusion to ensure a clean post-race environment.
Medical Aid
Emergency Medical Services (EMS), doctors and nurses are needed to provide race participants with any required medical support both at the finish and at first aid stations placed strategically along the race route.
Finish Line
Volunteers will ensure racers enter the finish line timing chute correctly and pass over the finish timing mat. Volunteers also maintain spectator distance from the timing mats and finish chute areas to ensure a clear unobstructed finish for all participants. Volunteers are also needed at the finish line to remove timing chips, race bib tear-off and serve immediate post-event beverages and nourishment to participants exiting race chutes.
Photography
If you would like to help take photographs for the SavageMan Triathlon, we would love your assistance. All race photographers will be assigned a location for photographs by a race organizer, and photographers will submit a DVD of all original photos. SavageMan staff will index all photos by athlete and load them onto the SavageMan Photos site where they are available for sale to athletes. The photographer receives 25% of all profits from sale, with the remainder going to the Joanna M Nicolay Melanoma Foundation.
